Two local Boy Scout leaders received the District Award of Merit at Pelathe District’s annual Adult Leader Recognition dinner Feb. 3 at First Baptist Church in Lawrence.

Arden Burgess of Boy Scout Troop 55 was recognized for more than 60 years of service to Scouting. Burgess grew up in Troop 55 when his father was scoutmaster, eventually becoming an adult leader himself. He served with troops in several other towns before returning to Lawrence where he has served for more than 50 years as the charter organization representative, linking Boy Scout Troop 55 with Westside Presbyterian Church.

Dave Ozaki, Scoutmaster of Troop 60 chartered to the First Baptist Church, was recognized for his years of service to Scouting in multiple roles. Ozaki has served as a den leader and cubmaster, assistant scoutmaster and scoutmaster, and has helped the district as a roundtable commissioner, a leader of various district activities, and on the district leader training team.

The District Award of Merit recognizes long-term volunteer Scout leaders and those who provide extended service to other Scout programs and district activities. The Award of Merit is the highest honor granted to volunteers at the district level.

Pelathe District provides Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing programs to youth in the Douglas County area.
