25 years ago: East Lawrence rezoning runs into opposition from neighbors

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 19, 1986:

  • An East Lawrence property consisting of three lots, which had been used as a small mobile home park for more than 30 years, had been rezoned to allow multifamily use. Some neighbors and the East Lawrence Improvement Assn. were opposed to the change, saying that it would eventually hurt the character of the neighborhood. Commissioners Ernest Angino and Sandy Praeger had opposed the rezoning, saying that single-family housing would help stabilize the area.
  • Lawrence city commissioners suggested that the land surrounding Wakarusa Drive be annexed into the city before the city would consider paving and widening the gravel road. Commissioners had not decided whether they would waive the requirement that developers pay 25 percent of the engineering and construction costs.
