40 years ago: Proposed state amendment would legalize Bingo games in Kansas

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 18, 1971:

  • An amendment to repeal the state constitutional ban on lotteries was passed by the Kansas House and was on its way to the Senate. The amendment, which would have allowed the legislature to legalize any form of gambling, was supported mostly by Kansas residents who wanted Bingo games legalized.
  • Fleetwood Enterprises’ new mobile home manufacturing plant was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the factory site, which was near 29th and Haskell Ave.
  • An antique grandfather clock, the gift of the Kansas University class of 1922, had suffered some minor damage when being moved during the Kansas Union fire the previous spring. Now repaired and retuned, the eight-foot clock was again keeping time in the remodeled Union lobby.
