February 16, 2011

— The hearing for a disabled Army veteran accused of stalking members of Topeka-based Westboro Baptist Church has been pushed back until next week.

The Wichita Eagle reports 26-year-old Ryan Newell was scheduled for a hearing Thursday, but instead will make an appearance Feb. 24.

The Marion man is charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated battery, a felony, and five misdemeanors.

He was arrested Nov. 30 after Sedgwick County sheriff's detectives found his vehicle backed into a parking space outside City Hall while five Westboro members met with police inside.

Westboro members routinely protest at military funerals, saying soldiers are killed because of the country's tolerance of homosexuality.

Newell lost both legs while serving in Afghanistan. He was released from jail on the condition he get treatment at the VA Hospital.
