From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 16, 1911:

• “In Honor of Lincoln — The members of the G. A. R. and affiliated orders had a big time at the court house today. At noon a big dinner, such as only the wives and daughters of veterans can cook, was served in the basement of the Court House and was immediately followed by an excellent program. It was estimated that between 250 and 300 were served. Prof. F. H. Hodder, of the department of History at the university, gave an excellent address upon the character of Lincoln.”
• “A series of aeroplane flights covering four days are assured for Lawrence next week. Contracts were closed with W. M. Evans, a Kansas City aviator last evening, to bring his $5,500 Green biplane here for a series of daring exhibitions.”
• “Continuing the fouling tactics which she used so consistently in the Thanksgiving game, Missouri lost to Kansas in basket ball on her own court last night. Sustaining a crushing defeat by a score of 32 to 16 puts the Tigers effectively out of the championship race.”
• “Relations are so strained between Russian and China that the two countries are on the verge of war. Russia notified the governments of Great Britain, France and Germany this afternoon, that she intends making military demonstrations against the Chinese. The trouble is along the Russian-Chinese frontier where the former claims China has violated the treaty of 1881. China is in the throes of a famine and the powers are expected to protest against a declaration of war at this time.”
