From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 8, 1971:

• Record low temperatures had been recorded in Salina and Topeka overnight. Salina reported a low of 18 below zero. Topeka registered 20 below, the coldest temperature recorded there since Jan. 4, 1947, when it had dipped to 21 below. Topeka’s temperature was also the coldest February reading since Feb. 13, 1905, when a low of 22 below had been recorded. More than one pair of jumper cables were called into duty in Lawrence before the morning commute, as the overnight low had been a frigid minus eight degrees.
• In response to a query by State Sen. Arden Booth, R-Lawrence, Atty. Gen. Vern Miller held that campus policemen at Kansas University were required to wear a badge of office, but that they did not necessarily need to be in uniform.
