Report: Favorite Kansas wheat variety now TAM 111

? The leading variety of winter wheat seeded in Kansas for the 2011 crop is simply called TAM 111.

Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that the TAM 111 variety accounts for 11.6 percent of all wheat varieties planted in the state. It’s the most popular variety in the western third of the state.

The agency says a variety called Fuller dropped to second in popularity after just one year at the top. About 10.3 percent of the wheat acreage in Kansas is planted with the Fuller variety. It remains the favorite wheat in the south-central and southeastern parts of the state.

Next most popular is a variety called Art. It jumped up five spots to take third place, accounting for 8 percent of Kansas’ wheat acreage.
