From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 31, 1971:

Highlights of the year’s local news stories were featured in today’s Journal-World. The fire at Sacajawea Hall on the Haskell Junior College campus had proven to be the biggest single loss by fire this year. Some of the other events mentioned were two drug raids conducted by Kansas Attorney General Vern Miller, the start of construction on Kansas University’s Wescoe Hall, the election of Nancy Hambleton as the first woman on the city commission under the City Manager-Commission form of government, the “hatching” of Baby Jay, the introduction of cable television in Lawrence, and the beginning of Don Fambrough’s tenure as head football coach at KU after Pepper Rodgers had moved to UCLA.

“PLEASE — Do not tow our truck away,” read a sign taped to the windshield of an abandoned vehicle in a no-parking zone just off 13th and Massachusetts. “It broke down just as we were heading home for Christmas. We will be back soon with time and money to take care of it. Have a happy holiday! Peace on Earth, Goodwill toward Men.” When appealed to thus, the police apparently had decided on clemency, saying, “If it’s not a traffic hazard we’ll give them a little while to get it moved.”
