Keep your tree green — recycle it

When your live-cut Christmas tree branches are no longer lovely, the city of Lawrence will recycle them.

The city will pick up live-cut trees on two Fridays: Jan. 6 and Jan. 13. In the past, the city has picked up trees on the two Mondays following the holidays, but this year they’ve changed the day because Monday falls so close to New Year’s Day.

The trees should be placed at the curb or alley for collection and should be set out by 6 a.m. the day of pickup.

All artificial items, such as tinsel, lights and tree stands, should be removed.

In the past two years, the city of Lawrence has helped residents recycle more than 4,400 trees.

The trees are used for wildlife habitat in a closed-down landfill site north of Lawrence.

Trees can be dropped off in McLouth at Rose Park. Leavenworth Jefferson Electric Cooperative will chip the trees into mulch.
