25 years ago: Flamingo Club volunteers preparing Christmas dinner

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 24, 1986:

Does the holiday season bring out the best in people? Some Lawrence residents in 1986 certainly had reason to think so. Bob Snow, one of the organizers of the fourth annual free Christmas dinner at the Flamingo Club, said he felt privileged to be part of the effort, adding, “The good comes out in people at this time of the year and there’s a lot of good in the people of Lawrence.” About 75 people were planning to donate at least part of their Christmas Day to serve a holiday meal at the club, located at 501 W. Ninth. The Flamingo was prepared to serve as many as 1,000 dinners, both at the club and for home delivery. Awaiting the diners this year were 20 hams, 20 turkeys, five hogs for barbecuing, and 200 pounds of beef roasts.
