40 years ago: Businesses, residences show variety of holiday decorations

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 23, 1971:

  • The rooftop of a building in Lawrence’s Hillcrest Shopping Center was featured in a front-page photo. The caption read, “The setting sun recently provided this dramatic backdrop for the life-sized Christmas manger scene on the medical building…. The impressive scene, with the crib of the infant Jesus as the focal point, serves to remind many of us at this special time of the year that while Mary and Joseph could find no room at the inn, hope springs eternal that people everywhere will find room in their hearts to create peace on earth and good will and brotherhood among men.”
  • Another holiday display was pictured on page 2, with the work of the Robert C. Greenlee family, 2806 Belle Haven Dr., featuring Santa and his reindeer as well as s giant snowman. The display had won the Non-Religious category of the Jaycee Christmas decoration contest.
