A Douglas County judge Thursday ordered a Franklin County man to stand trial for two robberies of a Lawrence man earlier this year.

District Judge Paula Martin made her decision after preliminary-hearing testimony earlier in the week. The victim alleged he was robbed at gunpoint in late January or early February and again on March 14 at his home in the 800 block of Hilltop Drive. Prosecutors accuse the suspect, Mikael Englund, 23, of Richmond, and other men of targeting the victim for marijuana he had. The victim did not report the first robbery to Lawrence police.

l For the first robbery Englund, 23, Richmond, will stand trial on one count of aggravated robbery because the victim identified Englund as one of the two robbers. Douglas County prosecutors this week dropped an aggravated kidnapping charge against Englund in connection with that case.

Trenton Rowsey, 19, Ottawa, was sentenced to 32 months in prison after pleading guilty to the first robbery. A Lawrence police detective alleges Englund confessed to participating in both robberies, although Englund’s attorney, Angela Keck, said she questioned whether his statements would be admissible at a trial.

l Englund was already ordered to face a trial for the March robbery, and on Thursday Martin ordered another Richmond man, Dustin A. Smith, 24, to also stand trial for the second robbery. Smith, like Englund, faces charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated battery and aggravated burglary.

A juvenile had his case adjudicated in September after he entered a plea in connection with the March robbery. The victim testified three men robbed him that night.

Englund’s trial is scheduled for Feb. 27. Smith’s trial is March 26.
