From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 13, 1986:

• A front-page article featured Lawrence mail carrier Galen White, whose father and grandfather had both worked with the local post office. Arthur H. White had begun carrying mail in the 1930s, and John White had entered the postal service after his U.S. Navy service during World War II. Galen White, who had spent half his life as a mail carrier, said that he enjoyed his route of 500 to 600 patrons. “I’m probably the last of the line,” White observed, adding that his son Warren, 22, had “found his niche” as the manager of a local car stereo store.
• The Special Committee on Federal and State Affairs had voted recently to recommend two proposed state laws to the 1987 legislature. The laws, which had passed overwhelmingly in the November 4 election, were to change the Kansas Constitution in order to allow pari-mutual betting on horse and dog racing as well as to create a state lottery.
