Pierce Brosnan returns to TV in the miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s best-seller “Bag of Bones” (8 p.m., A&E, concludes Monday). He plays novelist Mike Noonan, who is in the midst of signing books for legions of fans when his wife, Jo (Annabeth Gish), is struck and killed while crossing a Manhattan street. Noonan’s grief is compounded by suspicion when he discovers that she was pregnant at the time, years after doctors had told him he was unable to father a child.

Anguished by remorse and writer’s block and hounded by his slick agent (Jason Priestley) to churn out a quick book, Noonan retreats to a lakeside cabin in Maine that his wife had been renovating before her death.

Ensconced in rural comfort that his wife had created, he’s haunted by her vision and hounded by jealousy of any local man she may have befriended. He also becomes embroiled in a battle with a local power broker (William Schallert) and bewitched by dreams and visions of a long- dead blues singer (Anika Noni Rose) with links to the placid lake’s troubled past.

Like many King adaptations, “Bones” rattles on for far too long. Brosnan has a hard time pulling off so many scenes spent in a room all alone, anticipating bumps in the night. And some may find the tale of a blocked writer shuffling around a big house filled with ghosts and 1920s music a tad too close to “The Shining.”
