From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 11, 1971:

• Pinckney School, 810 W. Sixth, and the First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont, had both suffered overnight break-ins. The loss at the church was only a small amount of cash, but a complete list was still being compiled of items taken from the school. Another theft had taken place this week at Carson and Burger Inc., Sixth and New Hampshire, with entry into the area having been made through an elevator shaft. Missing were a sabre saw, an electric drill and a set of 60 drill bits.
• In other local crime news, two young men had been arrested at the scene of an attempted crime at Noland’s Champlin Service Station, 903 N. Third. One man had been crawling out of a back window of the station while the other had been sitting in a parked car. Loot taken amounted to $2.96, all in pennies.
