40 years ago: Lawrence postal carriers stand up to heavy holiday load

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 10, 1971:

  • The postal service was still enjoying heavy usage in 1971. Shown in a front-page photo is Joe Romero, carrier for Lawrence city route 39, pulling a package from his jeep-load of mail. Local postal officials estimated that their peak incoming parcel load would hit the weekend before Christmas.
  • Fire Chief F. C. Sanders had recently issued a special warning on increased fire dangers during the holiday season. Evergreen trees, loose and scattered Christmas wrapping, and a “resurgence of interest in candles” were among his concerns.
