KU hires risk manager for new post

Kansas University has hired a risk manager from the corporate world in a position that will oversee a variety of risk management efforts for the university.

Michael Rosenberg joins KU as the first person to serve in the post. He came to KU from the Pepsi Bottling Group, a $14 billion independent bottler of Pepsi Products. There, he served as director of risk management since 1999.

He will report to Theresa Gordzica, KU’s chief business and financial planning officer.

Gordzica said Rosenberg will be tasked with a number of responsibilities. One of his first duties will be to look at some of the insurance KU is carrying to determine if it’s appropriate for the university’s needs.

“He will be a very valuable resource for the community,” she said.

He will also look at other opportunities for the university to minimize risk and promote safety — such as examining the issues that may arise if a student group wants to bring a bounce house on campus, she said.

Before, risk management decisions weren’t centralized, Gordzica said, and were handled by her office, the office of general counsel and others. Individual units often took on the responsibility themselves.

Rosenberg will oversee all of the KU campuses: Lawrence, the Edwards Campus in Overland Park and the KU Medical Center campuses in Kansas City, Kan., and Wichita.

Rosenberg will make $105,000 in his new role.
