Brownback’s policy director to give school reform update

? A key aide to Gov. Sam Brownback is scheduled to return to the State Board of Education to give an update on the administration’s plans for reforming the Kansas school finance formula.

Landon Fulmer, the Republican governor’s policy director, will speak to the board Dec. 14 during its monthly meeting. Fulmer gave the board a briefing on main provisions of the new proposal in October.

Brownback wants to revamp the way Kansas finances its 283 school districts and distributes more than $3 billion in state aid. The governor’s proposal is the first significant revision to the finance formula in more than 20 years. It is expected to be ready when legislators convene their session Jan. 9.

Kansas is facing a lawsuit from a coalition of districts challenging the current formula.
