25 years ago: Natural gas prices lower than national average

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 8, 1986:

  • The price of natural gas in Lawrence was higher than the state average, but still less then the prices in Topeka and Kansas City, Kan. A survey released by the Kansas Corporation Commission also showed that Kansas prices were about 40 percent below the national average price. Natural gas was one of the state’s largest resources, with most found in the Hugoton fields in western Kansas, according to KCC information director and Lawrence resident Steve Menaugh.
  • Lawrence residents were lucky to be paying those lower-than-average prices for heating their homes. According to the 1986 calendar, winter was not scheduled to arrive until Dec. 21, but the cold season was getting an early start in Kansas. A storm system over the southwest part of the state was expected to meet up with a Canadian cold front tonight, bringing snow to all of Kansas.
