Fort Riley artillery unit returns from Iraq

? A 1st Infantry Division unit that traces its lineage to the Revolutionary War is returning to Fort Riley after deployment to Iraq, the last unit from the division to leave that country.

More than 350 soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery are returning on Tuesday to Fort Riley. They’re part of the 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team that spent the past seven months in northern Iraq.

Fort Riley officials say the battalion is the last division unit to leave Iraq after nearly eight years of continuous presence as the U.S. mission there ends.

The battalion, commanded by Lt. Col. Keith Casey and Command Sgt. Maj. Gabriel Espinosa, was formed by Alexander Hamilton during the Revolutionary War. Its nickname is “Hamilton’s Own.”
