40 years ago: Gas prices vary in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 5, 1971:

For unknown reasons, gasoline prices were varying in Lawrence by as much as 13 cents a gallon within a distance of only two or three blocks. At one point this week, the price ranged from 24.9 cents per gallon to 37.9 cents, depending on which station the motorist happened to choose. The Journal-World also reported that some stations had adopted a “mini-service policy,” where gas was several cents cheaper if the driver didn’t want any extra services such as windshield cleaning, oil check, or tire check.
