Woman pleads no contest in Topeka toddler’s death
Topeka ? Prosecutors say a 20-month-old Topeka girl was burned intentionally on her feet before dying, apparently from suffocation.
The information about the abuse suffered by Mireya Carmen Ortiz Rodriguez was revealed Friday during a hearing in which her father’s girlfriend pleaded no contest to her death on Aug. 12.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that 21-year-old Johana Iveth Villegas-Gonzalez made the plea to a charge of voluntary manslaughter. The charge was reduced from second-degree murder in a plea agreement.
Villegas-Gonzales will be sentenced Thursday.
