Topeka ? There’s no need for Attorney General Derek Schmidt to investigate Shawnee County Treasurer Larry Wilson. A letter from the attorney’s general’s office shows District Attorney Chad Taylor is already conducting a probe.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that commissioners discussed the letter during their meeting Thursday. The commissioners previously had asked both the attorney general and district attorney to investigate Wilson and initiate ouster proceedings if warranted.

Meanwhile, a committee is planning to circulate petitions seeking a recall election. State law allows elected officials to be recalled for reasons including failure to perform duties prescribed by law.

The committee contends Wilson has commingled funds from motor vehicle and real estate taxes and failed to reconcile accounts.

Wilson has faced criticism for long lines since he closed a motor vehicle annex.
