Governor’s Christmas tree to be displayed at statehouse

? A new twist takes place this week in the annual tradition of presenting a Christmas tree to the governor of Kansas.

Gov. Sam Brownback and his wife, Mary, will welcome a 10-foot Scotch pine tree on Friday when it is delivered to the south steps of the Statehouse in Topeka. Historically, the tree has been delivered to Cedar Crest, the official residence of Kansas governors.

The tree is presented each year by the Kansas Christmas Tree Growers Association. This year’s tree comes from the Memory Lane Christmas Tree Farm, owned by Harry and Juanita Peckham of Rantoul. The tree will be delivered by horse-drawn wagon owned by Robin Dunn of Wellsville.

A lighting ceremony will take place in the early evening Monday at the Statehouse.
