From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 1, 1971:

As the first December weekend approached, Lawrence folks were starting to purchase their Christmas trees. The Scotch pine was reported to be the most popular choice for Kansans, and a quick survey showed that it was grown on at least one tree farm in every county in the state. Other available varieties included balsam fir, Douglas fir, white pine, and Austrian pine. For the history-minded, the Eastern Red Cedar was also available — the traditional choice of pioneer families, but not as popular in modern households. Kansas State University foresters said that sales of Kansas-grown trees were at an all-time high, with every resident in the state living within driving distance of a tree farm. However, at least 75 percent of the trees sold to Kansans each year were imported from other states.
