Owner of two Lawrence textbook retailers files for bankruptcy protection; officials say no closures anticipated

Nebraska Book Co., which owns two Lawrence textbook retail stores, has declared for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Delaware.

The company owns the Jayhawk Bookstore, 1420 Crescent Road, and the University Book Shop, 1116 W. 23rd St.

Both stores — along with the rest of the company’s more than 280 stores across the country — will continue operating as usual, said Alex Griffin, a spokeswoman for the company.

“We’re not expecting anything to change operationally,” at the retail level, Griffin said. “Our stores are extremely busy right now due to the start of the school year.”

The company is undergoing a restructuring of its finances and looking to eliminate its debt, she said.
