Traffic on Kasold Avenue was shut down between Clinton Parkway and 24th Street because of a natural gas leak, according to Douglas County emergency dispatchers.

Curt Floerchinger, a spokesman for Black Hills Energy, said a 4-inch steel main had been severed. Floerchinger said he believed, and indeed confirmed, the line broke after it was hit by construction crews in the area. About 35 customers in the area were without gas service, he said.

Though the street was closed to traffic, crews allowed people living in the area go through to their homes, he said.

Natural gas had been reported in surrounding buildings as well.

As of 8:30 p.m., Floerchinger said crews had removed the broken section section of pipe and were in the process of replacing the damaged section. Following the procedure crews will weld and test the new section to ensure there are no leaks.

Floerchinger said Black Hills Energy crews working on the scene had resolved the situation by 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
