From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 22, 1971:

Four local Boy Scouts had traveled to the 13th World Scout Jamboree in Asagiri, Japan. Tim Fields, Mark Watson, Karl Capps, and Bill Douglas had been enjoying the international gathering on Mt. Fuji when a typhoon hit the area. After streams of rainwater ran through the camps, flooding supply tents, the Scouts were instructed to load everything they could carry into their duffel bags before being transported to a nearby schoolhouse, where they waited out the storms for two days, subsisting on crackers and canned foods. Returning to their campsite, the Scouts joined with the Japanese counterpart to the U.S. National Guard in building dams and bridges to protect the sites. The remainder of the Jamboree, the boys said, was filled with memorable programs, humor, friendships and fun. Watson said that he was already looking forward to the 1975 World Jamboree, to be held in Norway.
