40 years ago: Reader questions need for more than three TV channels

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 18, 1971:

  • In an ongoing series of informative advertisements titled “Cable Queries,” Sunflower Cablevision, which was scheduled to begin serving Lawrence with cable television services in September, fielded questions from the public on the new technology. Today’s ad featured the question, “If there are only three television networks, why should I be interested in more than three stations?” The reply: “It is amazing how much good television programming is available apart from network programs. There is approximately three times as much to choose from, for a Sunflower Cablevision subscriber, as there is available on the three networks.”
  • Several household items had been stolen from a rural home near Clinton, including a chest freezer, a sewing machine, a washer and an antique chair. Police had no suspects in the case.
