Authorities suspect alcohol contributed to motorcycle crash on U.S. 59

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers believe alcohol contributed to a Friday night motorcycle accident south of Lawrence in which a 37-year-old Overbrook man was injured, a sheriff’s spokesman said Monday.

Sgt. Steve Lewis said Jeremiah Adams suffered a head injury in the crash that occurred about 11 p.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 59 near Pleasant Grove about 5 miles south of Lawrence.

Investigators were waiting on lab results from a blood sample to confirm the amount of alcohol in Adams’ system at the time of the accident, Lewis said. Adams was injured when he was driving his 2000 Honda motorcycle south on U.S. Highway 59 and failed to negotiate a curve at the top of the hill, according to the preliminary accident report. In addition to suspected alcohol use, the report compiled by deputies listed driving too fast for conditions as a contributing factor.

Adams was taken via a LifeStar helicopter ambulance to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., where he was listed in good condition Monday morning, said Jill Chadwick, a hospital spokeswoman.
