From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 15, 1911:

• “A fall from the roller coaster at the park last night is causing a girl by the name of Lehman who lives upstairs in the 600 block on Massachusetts street considerable pain today. The accident occurred last night and is said to be due to the fact that the girl stood up in the car and was thrown out when it hit the curve. The car almost completed the trip around and was on the last loop when the accident occurred. The girl fell only a few feet, but she sustained a fractured jaw bone and a badly blackened eye. She is said to be getting along nicely, although she is unable to speak.”
• “Maurice Suiters who returned to Lawrence some months ago and again engaged in the watermelon business has sold $200 worth of melons from a single acre of ground. Mr. Suiters thoroughly understands raising melons and will make them his principle crop.”
• “In Washington, the president vetoed the joint resolution providing for the admission of New Mexico and Arizona to statehood. His reason for exercising the executive power of veto is based on his thorough disapproval of the recall of judges clause in the Arizona constitution. The fact that New Mexico’s statehood is bound up with that of Arizona meted out to her the same fate and neither territory can come into the union at this time.”
