From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 11, 1986:

• In a move to save money on supply costs, Lawrence school district administrators had recently decided to use a standardized logo that could be printed on stationery for all local schools. Local artists had been invited to submit suggestions for the logo, which was intended to exemplify “the teacher/pupil relationship of the public schools” and to be “adaptable to all the individual schools.”
• The 1986 Douglas County Fair had broken “all kinds of records,” said county extension agent Jack Lindquist. Thanks partly to the cooler temperatures brought on by recent rains, an estimated 55,000 people had turned out at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds over the course of the event, including 5,000 people in a standing-room-only crowd at the demolition derby.
