From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 11, 1911:

• “SWELTERING TODAY. — Relief is Promised for Tonight if You Can Live That Long. — A Most Extraordinary Season is Getting Worse Every Day. — With a temperature at 10:30 this morning of 94, Kansas City and surrounding country sweltered again today. The government forecaster said there was no immediate prospect of rain in Kansas or Oklahoma but that the entire southwest would experience a much lower temperature tonight or tomorrow.”
• “Michael Perry, the 9-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Newton Perry, of 1116 New Jersey street, has typhoid fever and an examination of the well on the promises shows it to be contaminated. The little chap has been sick for a week.”
• “Some children playing in the alley back of 124 Locust street this morning set fire to some trash that had accumulated there and then left the fire. It spread rapidly and was discovered in the barn at this number just as it started to catch fire to the hay that was in the mow. The owner of the place saw the fire and put it out with the aid of the fire department. It was a close call for the barn and its contents.”
