From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 10, 1911:

• “The capacity of the Lawrence Creamery was shown today when it supplied the C.P.A. picnic at Eudora with 135 gallons of ice cream and had it on the grounds in time. This is probably the largest order for ice cream ever placed in Lawrence and it was taken in competition with the Continental Creamery at Topeka, the largest concern of its kind in the world.”
• “From Lawrence it is estimated that at least 500 people went down to Eudora for the day. Some went on the early morning train, many drove down in carriages and autos and a large number went down on the afternoon train.”
• “Just fifty years ago today, August 10, 1861, the battle of Wilson’s Creek was fought, the hardest fought battle in the west during the civil war and many men from Kansas were killed or wounded at that engagement. Several of Lawrence’s best-known citizens were in that engagement and lost their lives. This was a half hundred years ago, a long time, and nearly all those who took an active part in those troublesome days have passed to their reward, while those now living are enjoying the blessings that have come to the country since that eventful time.”
