Arkansas City commissioners reject their 2012 salaries

? Although they admit it won’t help the city’s budget much, Arkansas City commissioners are giving up their salaries for the next year.

The Arkansas City Traveler reports that city employees were told of the commission’s decision Wednesday.

Commissioners make only $900 a year, or $75 a month. The commission said it gave up the salaries because of significant budget problems and recent reorganizations of the city staff.

Mayor Joel Hockenbury said the move was a symbolic gesture to show commissioners are willing to share in sacrifices that are being required by all city staff.
