40 years ago: New city bus service takes trial run

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 4, 1971:

A new bus service was temporarily available to the residents of North and East Lawrence. Three thousand copies of the route map and schedule were to be prepared by the city and mailed to people who had expressed an interest in the route. The three-month trial bus service was to begin daily runs on Aug. 15. Buses were to run from 6:50 to 10:10 a.m. and then again from 3:20 to 6:10 p.m. A statement attached to the schedule read in part: “For continued service it will be necessary for those persons who need this bus service to use it as much as possible.” Fare was 30 cents a ride, with no charge for transfers.
