25 years ago: Lawrence ski resort seeks water source for snow machines

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 2, 1986:

  • A proposed ski resort at Mont Bleu was in need of water for its snow-making machines, but the resort developer first needed approval from the Kansas Water Resources Division for use of water from the Wakarusa River. In July, the Douglas County Commission had approved a conditional use permit to allow development of the 60-acre ski area four miles southeast of Lawrence.
  • The Lawrence area was in for some enviable weather conditions for the first week of August 1986. A cold front had followed a bout of violent weather, and highs were only in the low 80s. It was even expected to get a little chilly overnight, with lows around 55 degrees. The rough weather preceding the cooler calm had not caused any damage in Lawrence, but three people in southern Kansas had been hurt when a tornado had struck their home.
