From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 1, 1986:

A photo showed the new AIS-315 ballot counter which was having a test run at the Douglas County Courthouse. The counter, which had a price tag of $42,500, was being leased by the county for the upcoming primary elections. County Clerk Patty Jaimes said that she wanted to see the counter in action before deciding whether to purchase it.

In Topeka, the Kansas Department of Agriculture had established 18 collection sites for farmers wishing to donate hay for farmers in the drought-stricken southeast. The department hoped to collect enough hay within the next 10 days to fill 80 railroad cars. The Union Pacific, Santa Fe and Norfolk & Southern railroads had donated the cars and were planning to ship the hay free of charge.
