Around and About for April 30, 2011

Two Emporia State University alumni, Louis Copt and Linda Reimond, both of Lawrence, were honored with a reception and awards ceremony March 3 at Washburn University. The Kansas Arts Commission names the Governor’s Arts Awards each year in five categories — arts organization, artist, arts advocate, arts patron, arts in education and distinguished arts award. Copt is the 2011 recipient of the artist award, and Reimond was recognized for arts in education.

The Douglas County Law Library Board of Trustees announces the results of the recent biennial election. Five local attorneys elected to fill two-year terms on the board that begin Sunday are: Julia V. Bellemere, Hatem Chahine, Jody Meyer, Craig A. Stancliffe and Charles E. Whitman. Whitman has served on the board since its creation in 2001. This will be the second term for Meyer and Stancliffe. Stephanie J. Wilson leaves the board after serving three terms, and Kenzie Singleton leaves after serving two terms.

Other board members are the six district judges of Douglas County: the Hons. Michael J. Malone (president), Robert Fairchild, Kay Huff, Peggy C. Kittel, Paula B. Martin and Sally D. Pokorny.

Dixie and Stephen Russell, Paxico, announce the birth of their daughter, Kirwin Marie Russell, on April 22, 2011, at Stormont-Vail Healthcare Center in Topeka.

Kirwin has a brother, Corbin, 2.

Her maternal grandparents are Richard and Shirley Theurer, Wellington; and her paternal grandparents are Robert and Michal Ann Russell, Baldwin City.

Her great-grandparents are Theda Wolford, Emporia, Jack Kastle, South Haven, and Nadine Peterson, Wellington.

Sara Fevurly, Lawrence, was named to the president’s honor roll for the 2010 fall semester at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater by earning a 4.0 grade-point average.
