Softball tourney: The City of Lawrence Parks and Recreation, in conjunction with Lawrence Softball Umpire Association, will host the Lawrence Pre-season Girls 12-Under Class B-C Fast Pitch Invitational Tournament on April 30 and May 1 at Lawrence’s Youth Sports Complex. Special Olympics Kansas Crappie Tournament: A crappie tournament to benefit Special Olympics Kansas will be 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30 at Clinton Lake Boat Ramp No. 2. Tournament sign-in will be from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. The registration is $80 for a two-person team if you sign up before April 22. It will $100 per two-person team to sign up the morning of the tournament. Arthritis WALK: The North East Chapter of the Kansas Arthritis Foundation will hold the sixth annual WALK for Arthritis in Lawrence. The event, a 5K and one-mile course, will begin at the Gazebo in South Park (12th & Mass streets) on May 7. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Bring your dog (it’s a dog walk, too). LHS softball camp: Lawrence High will hold a softball camp at its new field on campus from May 31 to June 3 for students entering grades 3-12. Golf Tourney: The fourth annual Open Wider, a four-person scramble golf tournament to benefit the Douglas County Dental Clinic, will take place at 1 p.m. April 29 at Alvamar Golf Club and is now taking registrations. Former KU basketball player Bud Stallworth will be this year’s featured guest and the event will include contests, prizes and a dinner after the golf. Cost is $100 per golfer. Orchards couples league: A couples golf league will begin play at 5 p.m. on May 14 at the Orchards. Once a month there will be a cook-out at the clubhouse following play. Couples interested please call Ed White, 843-7456.

Orchards junior league: A junior golf league for boys and girls ages 10 to 14 will start at 9 a.m. on June 8 at the Orchards. Play will continue until school starts. A reasonable skill level required to join. Entry fee is $10 and green fees are $8 for nine holes. Those that join will be allowed this same green fee through-out the season. Capoeira Training & Roda: Capoeira Dos Palmares offers family-oriented capoeira training for all skill levels ages 8 and up. Cost is $5 per participant, and the training takes place every Sunday in Lawrence 4-6 p.m. at Holcom. Wear comfortable attire and prepare to play barefoot or in ballet/kung fu slippers. Trail races: The Lawrence Trail Hawks will host the second-annual “Hawk 50-Mile and Marathon Trail Runs” on May 14 on Clinton Lake’s North Shore Trails. Online entry is available at www.Lawrencetrailhawks.com. The Lawrence Trail Hawks are Lawrence’s original trail- and ultra-running club. The race features T-shirts for all entrants, awards for all finishers and a cookout for runners, families and friends, beginning about 11 a.m.

Lawrence swim team and lessons: Ad Astra Area Aquatics is a competitive year-round swim team that offers practices for ages 6-18 throughout the week. AAAA is always accepting new members. Willow walk and run: The Willow Domestic Violence Center will host the Walk a Mile In Her Shoes: Red Shoe Walk and 5K on at 6 p.m., May 6, at Haskell Stadium. This event is to raise awareness of domestic violence in the Douglas, Franklin and Jefferson counties. Proceeds will help fund maintenance and programming of the Willow’s Safe Shelter, the cost of which totals about $1,332 per day. Participants may register to run the 5K or walk the stadium walk, and walkers are encouraged to wear women’s shoes. Registration is $25 and includes an event T-shirt. Swim academy: Registration is open for the Aquahawk Swim Academy swim-lesson program. The Aquahawk Swim Academy is designed to introduce new and beginner swimmers to the water, teach basic water safety and swimming skills to swim for fun or competitively. Prospects academy: The Lady Prospects AAU Basketball Club will host the Lady Prospects Summer Basketball Academy for all girls entering fourth through eighth grades. Little League Day: The Lawrence High baseball team will hold its first annual Little League Day at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Players will get in free by wearing their team shirt and hat. Players will take the field with the Lions for the national anthem and receive a Lions baseball wristband. Players can register for free tropical snow from Tads Tropical Snow during the game. Players need to meet by the first-base dugout at 1:50 p.m. to take the field with the Lions.

Wrestling club: Practices for the Douglas County Gold FS/GR Wrestling Club will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. and Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the South Gym (Eigth and Chapel Streets) in Baldwin City. Wrestling tournament: The Douglas County Gold FS/GR Wrestling Tournament will take place on Saturday at the Baldwin High School gym. Registration/weigh-in will take place from 7-8 p.m. on Friday, or from 7-8 a.m. on Saturday. The cost is $20, plus $5 for GR matches.

Summer sports: The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is taking team registration for summer adult softball, kickball, volleyball and basketball. LHS summer camp: The Lawrence High boys basketball summer workout camp for fourth- through eighth-graders will take place from 12:30-2 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays from June 6-July 20. The camp will be instructed by LHS coaches and former LHS players. The camp fee is $100, and the preferred registration date is Monday, May 23, though late registration and walk-ins are welcome. Former KU golfer Chris Thompson wins eGolf Tour event: Former Kansas University golfer Chris Thompson won the eGolf Tour’s Columbia Open on Saturday, posting a four-round total of 23-under to win the event by two strokes in Blythewood, S.C. With the victory, the 34-year-old Thompson took home a $35,000 first-place prize. It was Thompson’s second win on the eGolf Tour, as he also won last year’s HGM hotels Classic at Rock Barn in Conover, N.C. The former KU All-American is currently third on the tour’s money list.

Canine Disc Championships: The Lawrence Parks & Recreation Department is playing host to the 2011 Hyperflite Skyhoundz Canine Disc Championships at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at South Park (1141 Massachusetts Street). KU soccer camps: The Kansas University Soccer Weekicks Camp will take place from 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. June 6-10; the Day Camp from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 6-10 for grades 4-12; the Girls Residential and Girls team camp has two sessions. Aquahawks: The Lawrence Aquahawks Swim Club is accepting new members. Interested new swimmers may come to the Aquahawks practices Monday-Fridays, 4-5:30 p.m., at the Indoor Aquatic Center. Coaches are available during this time to work with new swimmers and talk to parents about swimming for the Lawrence Aquahawks.
