From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 25, 1986:

• The Kansas House passed (63-62) and sent to the Senate a controversial proposal to require front-seat passengers of cars and pickup trucks to buckle their seat belts or face a fine. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Jessie Branson, D-Lawrence, said that the bill would help cut down on the 450-500 traffic fatalities occurring in Kansas every year.
• Two of baseball’s big names were scheduled to be in Lawrence in a week’s time for speaking engagements. Commissioner Peter Ueberroth was to deliver an address in the Kansas Union Ballroom as a part of the J.A. Vickers Sr. Memorial Lecture Series, while Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle was to be the keynote speaker at the Kansas Insurance Education Foundation banquet at the Holidome.
• Just three days after setting a temperature for an overnight freeze, the Lawrence area was making the local record books again for highs in the mid 80s. Such a swing was “unusual,” according to Kansas University Weather Service forecasters.
