The NWS has allowed the urban and small stream flood advisory for northwestern Douglas County to expire.

The threat for severe thunderstorms is likely over for Friday, though some rain showers may move through Douglas County before noon.

6:55 a.m. update

The NWS has canceled the severe thunderstorm watch for Douglas County, but issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for northwestern Douglas County and southern Jefferson County until 8 a.m.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall Friday morning will cause elevated levels in small creeks and streams. Water will also gather on rural roads and farmland along the banks of creeks and streams.

These areas have already seen 1-2 inches of rain in the past two hours, and up to another inch of rain is possible Friday morning.

Locations impacted include:

• North Lawrence
• Grantville
• Lecompton
• McLouth
• Perry
• Williamstown
• Perry Lake
• Kansas Turnpike mile markers 189-206

5:38 a.m. update

The U.S. National Weather Service out of Topeka has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Douglas and surrounding counties effective until 9 a.m. Friday.

Counties in our area included in the watch are:

• Anderson
• Brown
• Coffey
• Douglas
• Franklin
• Jackson
• Jefferson
• Lyon
• Morris
• Nemaha
• Osage
• Pottawatomie
• Shawnee
• Wabaunsee

Scattered, widespread thunderstorms will move across central and eastern Kansas throughout Friday morning. Hail up to the size of golf balls is possible.

The areas with the greatest risk for severe weather will be near and south of Interstate 70.

Thunderstorms should move out of the area by noon. The NWS predicts Friday’s high temperature will be near 72 degrees.
