From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 20, 1986:

• Local physical education teachers were echoing recent warnings by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. The national officials had recently reported that the lack of mandatory daily gym glasses in public schools was the main reason behind an “alarming” lack of fitness in schoolchildren.
• Jefferson County residents voted 119 to 113 to oppose a bill that would have allowed the Kansas Department of Corrections to operate a meat processing plant near Oskaloosa. The measure would have allowed the department to purchase and operate the former Shomin Meat Processing Plant.
• More than 200 people had attended the local daffodil show in Lawrence which had taken place earlier in April. Winners in the design competition were Ruth Sleeper, first place, and Kit Carlsen, second place. In addition to other design and horticulture awards and daffodil-related works of art, there was also a display of daffodil drawings by a group of fifth-graders from Hillcrest School.
