From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 19, 1986:

• About 400 people returned to their alma mater to attend the 40th annual Social Work Day, a conference for the Kansas University School of Social Work alumni. The theme for the day was “The Kansas Family Redefined.” Participants attended lectures and workshops on non-traditional family patterns and ways in which social workers could deal with the “changing face of the family” in 1986.
• While questioning its constitutionality, Gov. John Carlin reluctantly signed into a law a new bill. The controversial law would set a $1 million limit on the amount victims of medical malpractice could be compensated for their injuries.
• Lawrence High School performers were in the final round of rehearsals before “Showtime,” the annual spring variety show. Several student performers were shown in a photo, including Libby Orchard, Leslie Michel, Derek Walker, Wendy Taylor, Mark LaPoint, Chip Halderman, Becky Ford, and Carmen Ainsworth.
