A rugby player who attended the University of Texas has died after suffering a head injury in a rugby match near Lawrence.

Stephanie Flores was a member of the Texas Rugby Union All-Star Team and was playing in a tournament game on April 10 at the Westwick Rugby Complex on Douglas County Road 458 southwest of Lawrence.

She died on Thursday after being treated in a Kansas City-area hospital, said her coach, Traci Schmidtke.

She hit the ground after a tackle, but Schmidtke said there was nothing abnormal or malicious about the tackle, she said.

“This was just an unfortunate tragedy,” Schmidtke said.

Condolences to the family. Rugby is a tough sport. In my one season I broke more bones than all other sports or years of sports combined. This is an unfortunate tragedy.

Prayers to the family. Just the other day, a student at Haskell Indian Nations University collapsed and died at Tecumseh Hall. He was playing basketball with friends when he collapsed on the court. He was from Ardmore, Oklahoma.

Thanks srj. Donating now.

My husband coaches high school rugby and my step-son plays, as did my husband. It's a tough sport, but the kids are coached on how to hit the right way to reduce injury and the refs are there to not only ref the game but to help protect the players.

Sadly, impact sports cause injury, but so do non-impact sports.

My condolences to her family and friends.

That's also so sad about the basketball player from Oklahoma. My condolences to his family and friends as well.

How very sad. I'm so sorry for all involved. I loved playing rugby! I can only hope she did too. My condolences to her family, team, and friends.
