From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 15, 1971:

• “Children playing with matches” was the probable cause listed in an East Lawrence fire. A former horse barn, described by its owner Valentine Romero as being 99 years old, at the rear of the property at 909 Pa. had burned on a recent afternoon. Lawrence firemen estimated the building’s value at $400 and said that it had contained about 100 bales of alfalfa hay, valued at $100.
• Teachers in the Basehor-Linwood U.S.D. 458 were to be the best-paid in the area during the next year. Negotiating teams and the Board of Education had arrived at a base salary of $6,600 for the school year. Tonganoxie’s U.S.D. 464 had arrived at a base pay for a beginning teacher at $6,526, up from $6,200 during the current year. Other starting salaries in the area were $6,350 in DeSoto, $6,250 in Eudora, and $6,300 in Wellsville, Perry-Lecompton, and Baldwin.
• Eudora seventh-grader Kim Nitz was the winner of the Douglas County Spelling Bee championship, having correctly spelled the word “boutonniere.” Laurie Bonner, a Pinckney School sixth-grader, came in second.
