Federal charges filed in Kansas City adoption scam

? A Missouri woman is facing federal charges accusing her of faking pregnancy to collect money and other items from prospective adoptive parents.

Roxanne Janel Jones was charged in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., on Wednesday with 11 counts of wire fraud and one count of using someone else’s Social Security number.

The Kansas City Star reports the charges stem from an alleged scam in which Jones received $830 from a couple who thought they would be adopting her unborn twins.

The 34-year-old Kansas City, Mo., woman is in Johnson County, Kan., jail on state charges related to a similar scheme.

Her attorney from the Johnson County Public Defenders office did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
