From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 14, 1971:

• Bob Pulliam today was elected mayor of Lawrence for the coming year by his fellow city commissioners. John Emick was selected vice mayor. The three new members of the commission were Nancy Hambleton, Jack Rose and Charles Fisher. They were replacing outgoing mayor Donald Metzler, Clark Morton and James Black.
• Few details were available on a reported sniping incident at about 5 a.m. near Linwood involving a local train. A Union Pacific spokesman said that he did not have any more information on the incident. Other reports of trains being fired at had been received in the past several months, but these had mostly occurred west of Lawrence, near the Douglas-Shawnee county line.
• After a near-record high just two days previously, the Lawrence area was expecting frost tonight. Overnight lows were to fall into the upper 20s to low 30s, coming within a few degrees of a record 23 degrees set in 1960.
