Kansas House chamber gets new paint to repair water damage caused by leaky copper roof

? Workers are touching up the paint in the Kansas House chamber to repair water damage caused by the Statehouse’s leaky copper roof.

Statehouse Architect Barry Greis said Tuesday the painting should be done this week.

Greis said the touchup is necessary because water leaked through brittle, aging roof joints, through attic space and into the chamber. He said in spots, paint bubbled or became streaked.

Legislators are taking their annual spring break and won’t reconvene until April 27.

The leaks were most noticeable after a January snow storm and became a source of frustration for legislators because the Statehouse is undergoing a massive renovation.

That renovation could cost $340 million by the time it’s completed in 2013, a figure that includes replacing the roof.
