40 years ago: No pay raises for state employees at KU after budget cuts

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 10, 1971:

  • Recent cuts by the state legislature to colleges and universities were likely to be upheld in conference committees, according to a report from Topeka. Kansas University Chancellor Laurence Chalmers said that if funding was not restored, there would be no pay raises the following year for the university’s classified employees. The cuts, which would reduce the KU budget by approximately $1 million, would cause the KU administration to ask all areas to “review their needs and priorities.”
  • Winds and dry weather were combining to bring a small duststorm into Kansas today. The arid conditions were expected to continue as the temperatures began to cool into the 60s, with an overnight drop to the 40s. Children were evidently enjoying the warmer weather, as shown by a front-page photo of young friends Katie Stauffer and Laura Bodle sitting on the lawn cuddling a pair of cute puppies which belonged to one of Laura’s neighbors.
